While I offer machine sewn version of many of my products, this item can only be sewn by hand. The construction is more complex than it might appear at first glance.
 
The exterior of the pencil cup shows only grain side leather, the each piece of leather at the bottom seam must be mitered to accomplish this, that means the edge of each pieces was cut at a 45 degree angle before sewing so that finished surface meets finished surface at the edge.
 
Along the side seam, the leather is sewn edge to edge, with no overlap, so that the top of the cup is one smooth, unbroken ring.
 
These two stitches, among other challenges this design presents make this perhaps the most technically difficult thing I have listed for sale.

This pencil cup measures 3 inches in diameter, and 4 inches high.

The leather is 8/9 oz, or just under 1/8th of an inch thick, strong enough to stand to serious daily use for many years.

I source my leather from Hermann Oak Tannery in St Louis, Missouri. They are the oldest tannery in the United States, in continuous operation since 1881 and offering a product of truly unmatched quality.

The thread is a marine grade nylon. Originally designed for sail-making, able to bear many times the weight of the natural fiber threads I used before, it will stand up to UV light and abrasion better than anything I've yet found.
